Dear Newspaper Division Members,

The following may be of interest to you:

Call for Book Chapter Proposals
Social Identity and Communication: New Agendas

We invite submissions from junior scholars (assistant professors, new
associate professors, advanced doctoral students) of chapter proposals
for a forthcoming edited volume from Rowman and Littlefied featuring
ground-breaking meta-analyses, syntheses, and comprehensive summaries of
research programs about the role of media in establishing and
maintaining social group identities. The volume is intended to inform
readers of the current state of this important field of study and offer
directions for future research that will build new theory. We define
“social groups” broadly to include those based on race, ethnicity,
gender, sexual orientation, religion, class, etc. Chapters may be based
on a single social group, a set of social groups, or social groups
generally. Chapters must go beyond a single study to offer general
insights. Chapters may be co-authored with senior scholars but a junior
scholar must be the first author. The author(s) of an accepted chapter
proposal must submit electronically to the editors listed below a
complete draft of the chapter by July 20, 2010. The first author of
accepted chapters must attend a conference workshop in Austin, Texas,
Aug. 15-17, during which chapters will be presented and critiqued, and
revisions suggested in preparation for publication. Travel, lodging and
meals associated with the conference will be covered.

Chapter Proposal Guidelines: Submit an extended abstract (2-4 pages)
describing your chapter. In it, identify the specific aspects of the
media’s role in the formation or maintenance of social identities which
your chapter will examine; provide a summary or outline of your proposed
chapter; and include a bibliography of sources to be used in your
chapter. Include your academic title, affiliation, and contact
information. Send your proposal electronically to
Lasorsa at mail.utexas.edu AND to arodriguez at mail.utexas.edu by April 16,
2010. Address questions to: Dominic Lasorsa, University of Texas, School
of Journalism, 1 University Station A1000, Austin, TX 78712;
